The poem "we are more" by Shane Koyzen was a speech that was read during the Canadian winter Olympics by the author himself. This poem is more than just a poem; it is a compilation of everything that is Canadian stockpiled into 3 minuets of golden sound. "We are young, we are cultures strung together then woven into a tapestry and the design is what makes us more than the sum totals of our history", this is a metaphor identifying that our country is not only still young compared to other country’s, but we are a nation that was founded by many ethnicities from around the world making us very diverse and cultural. The author uses metaphors to paint a picture in the listeners mind. Instead of saying "we are like cultures strung together" he directly states that "we are cultures strung together" giving a much stronger connection. When you get the chance to hear a poem read by the author instead of reading it from a book you get a much stronger emotional tie to the poem. You really do feel and get a better sense of were the author is coming from and how he feels about it. With this I conclude that the use of metaphors to create analogies in the mind of the listener helps to create a vivid picture in the minds of the listeners, and the emotion at which Shane Koyzen uses gives a much more heart filled and powerful meaning for the audience.
